Wonderful holidays on the Greek volcano island

The landscape of Santorini is characterized by black sandy beaches and whitewashed houses, which are arranged on mountain slopes in the form of stairs. There are accommodations on this island in the coastal region as well as in the interior. If you choose a vacation rental in Santorini, located in the centre of the island, the nearest beach is no more than two kilometres away.

With exclusive holiday residences, the dream view is included

From almost every vacation rental on Santorini you can enjoy an indescribably beautiful view of the sea and the houses below at any time of the day. You will also find a number of well-equipped villas with comfortable interiors and outdoor Jacuzzis on this island. The accommodations are all built in the Cycladic style and exude a charm of their own.

Holiday on Santorini

Location and orientation

Pure relaxation in the Aegean Sea

The main island of the Santorini group of islands, a small Greek archipelago, belongs to the Cyclades and is about 120 kilometres from Crete. The nearest islands are Ios and Anafi. Santorini has an airport with a stopover in Athens from Germany. In addition, a ferry from Piraeus, the port of Athens, will take you to your holiday destination after a journey of about ten hours.

Travelers and Activities

Bathing holidays at an unusual location

In most cases a finca on Santorini has its own pool. However, you can reach the beaches from the coastal accommodations in just a few minutes on foot. The Red Beach, which is lined by a high red rock wall, offers a bathing scenery of a special kind. In the south of the island you will find the black colored sandy beach Vlichada. One of the most popular beaches is the beach of Kamari in the southeast.

Paradisiacal conditions for hiking

The unique flora and fauna as well as the geological characteristics of this volcanic island make Santorini particularly suitable for hiking. The probably most beautiful route leads from Pyrgos to Kamari and runs over the highest peak of Profitis Ilias and to the ancient Thera. The well signposted route takes between two and a half and three hours to walk.

It is good to know that Santorini is a lively wine-growing area. The excellent taste of the regional wines comes from the grapes of the varieties Aidáni, Asýrtiko or Mandilariá.

Top travel tips

1. walk to the rediscovered city

Thera is an ancient city that was discovered during excavations. It lies on a long mountain ridge between the seaside resorts of Perissa and Kamari. Alt-Thera, whose location offers a phenomenal view of the Aegean Sea, can be reached on foot, by mule or minibus.

2. the lighthouse above the volcano crater

A special attraction is the lighthouse, which is located at the Cape Akrotiri in the southwest of Santorini. From the 110 metre high lighthouse you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the volcanic crater and the open Aegean Sea.

3. learn interesting things in the museum

In Fira you will find the Archaeological Museum, the oldest museum on the island. There is an extensive collection of unique finds that have been made in recent decades. The exhibits mainly date from the first millennium before Christ and show interesting depictions of battles and everyday life on vases and other objects.
