The fortress of the city was built in the second half of the 16th century. An extension in 1645 was made according to the plans of Nicolau de Langres, a French military engineer who had already served Louis XIII before. The baroque church Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda is the oldest church of Peniche. The church was built at the beginning of the 17th century. In the nave you will find unique panels from Azulejos, which have been processed in high artistic quality and are extremely worth seeing.

The entire urban area of Peniche extends over a peninsula surrounded by high cliffs. In the northern area, however, the sea drops flat, which is why you will find a wonderful, long sandy beach here. In the west, at Cabo Carvoeiro, there is a lighthouse. To reach the Gruta da Furninha cave, it is best to take the stairs that start at the coastal road.
