Location and orientation

Holidays on the highest mountain of the Luberon

The Luberon is a mountain range consisting mainly of limestone rocks. This popular hiking region is located in southern France, about 50 kilometres southeast of Avignon. The massif is divided into the Grand Luberon to the east and the Petit Luberon to the west. The highest elevation of the Luberon is the Mourre Nègre with a height of 1,125 meters.

Enjoy the splendid landscapes of the Luberon

The largest part of the Luberon area is covered with downy oaks and Atlas cedars. The landscape is also used to grow wine, cereals, fruit and vegetables, and lavender. The area around the Luberon has interesting caves, pretty valleys and picturesque villages enthroned on steep cliffs.

If you want to get an impression of the scenic beauty of the Luberon, watch the feature film "The Perfume - The Story of a Murderer", which was shot mainly in Provence and on the Luberon.

Things to know

The nature park invites you to go hiking

A vacation rental in Luberon is the perfect starting point to reach the Luberon Regional Park around the mountain range of the same name with its numerous hiking trails in just a few minutes. The park is part of the Luberon-Lure biosphere reserve and reveals a rich fauna and flora as well as a varied landscape during your walks. There are also some wonderful routes for cyclists and mountain bikers.

Top travel tips

1. The village on the summit of Mont Ventoux

On your Luberon trip you should definitely visit the town of Roussillon. In addition to its unique location and breathtaking views, the village offers a unique hiking trail, the "Sentier des Ocres", which shines particularly colourfully in ochre. A small toll is to be paid for the walk along the path. You can also visit the museum in the nearby ochre factory "Conservatoire des Couleurs".

2. A monastery in the midst of flowering lavender fields

Notre-Dame de Sénanque is an architectural peculiarity of the Luberon region. This is a Cistercian monastery in Gordes that was founded in 1148. The simple and unadorned architecture of the building complex reflects the ideal of a strictly ascetic monastery and is therefore unique.

3. Hike to the emerald green spring

Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is a scenic highlight in the Luberon region. There is a spring pot, which transports the crystal clear water of the Sorgue upwards. The source of the Sorgue is located at the foot of a high rock face. Underneath lies a vast cave and spring system, which was systematically explored by the French marine researcher Jacques-Yves Cousteau in several dives.
