The French region of Aquitaine lies between the Pyrenees on the border with Spain and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The capital of the region is Bordeaux. The provincial capital Paris is located about 600 kilometres from Aquitaine. It takes about two hours by car to reach Toulouse.

In Aquitaine you will find an extremely varied landscape. On the Atlantic coast, the region is characterized by an extensive heathland and beautiful sandy beaches. One of the most outstanding sights of Aquitaine is the Lascaux Cave. It has the oldest cave paintings in human history and is therefore a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The paintings probably originate from the archaeological culture of Magdalenia. They are assigned to the French-Cantabrian cave art.

Nature lovers should definitely take a trip to the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park. It covers an area of 315,300 hectares and offers a number of beautiful scenic features. These include the pine forest, the valley of the river Eyre with its important wetland ecosystem and the land around the Arcachon basin where migratory birds find shelter.

The Dune du Pilat stretches over three kilometres and is up to 110 metres high and 500 metres wide. For this reason it is considered the largest sand and moving dune in Europe. It comprises a pure sandy area of 135 hectares and is surrounded by a 4,000 hectare forest. Dune du Pilat, which has been protected since 1978, can be found directly on the Atlantic coast, south of the town of Archacon and opposite Cap Ferret.
