Apartments on Ile de Re

Charming vacation rentals on the "white island

To explore the whole island with its fantastic landscape, vacation rentals on Ile de Re are perfect starting points. Most of the houses are very close to the sea and not far from the beaches, so you can reach them on foot. On the island of Ile de Re, which is only 30 kilometres long, you can reach every point of interest from your vacation rental by car. The walled town of Saint-Martin-de-Ré on the north coast is particularly charming.

Getting to the fish market shortly

Whether directly on the beach or inland, a holiday apartment on Ile de Re allows you to enjoy delicious fish and freshly caught oysters, which are a real specialty on the spot. Whether you enjoy the fish in one of the excellent restaurants of the island, or rather prepare it in your garden on the grill, is entirely up to you. Those who prefer to swim in a pool despite the proximity to the sea will also find a suitable apartment on the island.

Holidays on Ile de Re

Location and orientation

Holidays beyond the French West Coast

You can experience France in its most typical form on the island of Ile de Re, not far from the west coast of France. The island can be reached via a 2.9 kilometre long bridge that leads from La Rochelle to the island. The island of Île d'Oléron lies north of the island of Ile de Re, which is 30 kilometres long and up to five kilometres wide. The narrowest part of the French island is by the way only a few hundred metres wide.

Things to know

To the oyster production plant

Oysters are a real delicacy on Ile de Re and are offered fresh from the boat at many markets and on the quay. The production facilities of the oyster and shellfish farms are mostly located on the north coast. Of course, a tasting is also offered directly on site.

Excellent climatic conditions for summer holidays

On Ile de Re, the sun shines an average of 2,800 hours a year. But this is not the only reason why the island is suitable for a relaxing holiday. The warm sea is also positively favoured by the Gulf Stream, which is why Ile de Re is also a particularly family-friendly holiday destination.

Wine has been grown on Ile de Re since the 10th century, which is why you should definitely try Ilrhea, a typical regional Pineau made from red and white grape must.

Top travel tips

1. A walk through the fish sluices

You can explore the island by bike from your vacation rental in Ile de Re prima, as there are cycle paths about one hundred kilometres long. For walks, the area of the fish locks at Sainte-Marie-de-Ré and Saint-Clément-des-Baleines is interesting. Take the tour over the Schleusenwall to the lighthouse. But be careful! The path can only be walked on at low tide.

2. Observe very special bird species

On the island you will find the bird sanctuary Réserve naturelle de Lilleau des Niges, in which many species nest on 1,500 hectares. These include in particular barnacles, ringed geese, plovers and curlews. In the information centre you will also learn everything you need to know about the flora and fauna of the area.

3. Unusual place of death on the island

Worth seeing is the Peu Pierroux burial mound, which consists of many flat stones and has a diameter of 27 meters. In the middle there is a stone table supported by seven columns. These columns are connected by walls that reveal small rooms. There are all kinds of bones and grave goods, such as stone axes and earthenware.
