Location and orientation

Historic city of Brittany

About 23 kilometres south of the coast of the English Channel, the French metropolis extends in the west of the country in the Département Côtes-d`Armor. About 14,000 inhabitants live in the historic city, whose old town is 75 meters high above the river La Rance.

Metropolis of art and history

Dinan is one of the oldest municipalities in Brittany and can look back on a thousand years of history. In 1985, the Ministry of Culture named Dinan "City of Art and History". Particularly impressive are the 115 timber-framed buildings, the three-kilometre-long fortification wall and architectural masterpieces of past centuries.

Every year in August, the medieval spectacle and knight festival "Fête des Remparts" takes place on three days.

Things to know

The green lungs of the city

In addition to the unique atmosphere in the medieval alleys, the city's three public gardens offer extensive parks for recreation and at the same time a meeting point for various leisure activities. The string stops occupy 6,000 square metres in the neighbourhood of the old town. Here you will meet families who picnic, skate, play football or tennis. The Val Cocherei garden is also considered family-friendly, with a small stream flowing through it and an abundance of playgrounds, animal enclosures and flower beds. You will find hundred-year-old trees and British garden art in the English garden, which was laid out around the Governor's Tower.

Artistic impressions

Dinan is famous for his artistic commitment and supports aspiring and established artists of the country. Every summer the governor's house from the 15th century is transformed into a varied exhibition. Young talents can also take part in the festival of young fashion designers. For more than 20 years, designers have been presenting their creations on the city's prestigious catwalks. Musical talents also attract thousands of visitors to the music festival every year. The cultural event offers a colourful mix of rap music, rock and sailor songs.

Top 5 travel tips

1. ancient landmark of the city

The gigantic Château de Dinan towers in the south of the old town. The castle combines three elements from different eras. The keep dates from the 14th century, the Donjon tower from the 15th and the Guichet Gate from the 16th century. During a guided tour you can visit the impressive ensemble and learn interesting facts about the fortifications of the ducal residence. The Artillery Tower also houses the City Museum, which presents the archaeology, culture and history of Dinan with 5,000 exhibits.

2. outstanding place of worship

Between the English Garden and La Rance, the Saint-Sauveur Basilica, the Basilica of the Holy Redeemer, has been located since the 12th century. The church is still unfinished and has Romanesque, Persian and Byzantine elements. Particularly impressive are the three bell towers, elaborate glass paintings and reliefs, magnificent sculptures and the altarpieces.

Cast off 3rd!

In the port of La Rance, various boat trips invite you to discover hidden treasures on the banks and enjoy the medieval atmosphere of the city from the water. You glide along the fortification wall, pass bell towers, old bridges and castle ruins. During the one-hour trip you will learn interesting facts about the city's history and listen to funny anecdotes.

4th Wonderful House of Artists

The Yvonne Jean-Haffen Museum in the port of Dinan is dedicated to the artist of the same name. Her former residence is now open to the public and displays original furnishings and a variety of valuable works of art, which she created until her death in 1993. Works include ship decors, drawings, ceramics and illustrations.

5th promenade in maritime ambience

Along La Ranche it is worth taking long walks that lead to the city's marina. Street musicians and illustrators enliven the pedestrian zone and restaurants offer regional specialities. You can linger in cafés, stroll through boutiques or take advantage of the port's water sports facilities.
