Lausanne is the capital of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It lies directly on the northern shore of Lake Geneva and is one of the largest municipalities in the country, alongside Geneva, Zurich, Berne, Basel and Winterthur. In the hinterland, the region is characterised by several valleys and slopes of the Vaud Mittelland. Lausanne also includes the three hills Saint-Laurent, Le Bourg and Cité, which divide the city.

The Eurovision Song Contest took place in 1989 for the last time in Switzerland, at the Palais de Beaulieu.

1. Visit magnificent buildings in the city centre

Lausanne has a number of historic buildings that you should definitely visit during your walk. These include the cathedral Notre-Dame and the basilica Notre-Dame du Valentin from the early 19th century. Also impressive is the 15th century Saint-Maire Castle, once the seat of the bishop and the bailiff, with its four corner towers in brick architecture.

2. Go on a museum tour

Lausanne is regarded as the cultural centre of western Switzerland, which is why there are several important exhibition houses to be seen here. These include the Museum of Art, the Museum of Archaeology and History and the Museum of Swiss Photography "Musée de l´Elysée. The Musée Olympique documents the Swiss Olympic movement since the late 19th century.

3. Nearby recreation areas

Along the lake shore there are extensive recreation areas with swimming pool, seaside resort, sports facilities, playgrounds and boat harbour facilities. You will also find several parks throughout the city, such as the Botanical Garden, the Esplanade de Montbenon and the Monrepos area. You can also relax in the town forest of Sauvabelin and in the area around Chalet-à-Gobet.
