Travelers and Activities

Perfect conditions for hiking, cycling and skiing holidays

In the north of Lombardy you will find high mountains, which are an excellent hiking and skiing area. The highest point of the summit world is the 4,020-metre-high Punta Perrucchetti, which belongs to the Bernina Group. Lombardy also extends into the catchment area of the Rhine, where there are wonderful opportunities for cycling.

Vacation at the lake

Lake Garda belongs to the Lombardy region and is a true Mecca for mountain bikers and surfers. Famous villas from the 19th and 20th centuries can be discovered on the shores of Lake Como. Part of Lake Lugano is also in Lombardy. Furthermore, you can experience wonderful bathing and water sports holidays on Lake Maggiore.

In the Middle Ages the entire northwest of Italy, including Genoa, Piedmont and the Swiss Ticino, belonged to Lombardy. At that time the region was known in German-speaking countries under the name "Lampartenland", as this name is used in the legends of Wolfdietrich.

Top 3 travel tips

1. On the UNESCO World Heritage Site at the lake

The sacred mountain of Sacro Monte di Ossuccio on Lake Como is one of the most famous in Lombardy. Since 2003 it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List with its many chapels built between 1635 and 1710. The chapels that stand on the ascent to the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Salvation represent the mysteries of the Rosary.

2. Visit the castle and the harbour

The Castello Sirmione, which was built in the 13th century, lies directly on Lake Garda. It has high walls, numerous towers, its own harbour and a well-preserved town gate. From the keep, you have a fantastic view of the ground plan of the castle as well as of the adjacent old town of Sirmione, which is also worth a visit.

3. Taste Lombard specialities

One of the most famous Lombard dishes is the Minestra, a vegetable soup that is prepared with a great deal of content. Another typical dish of the region is "Ossobuco alla Milanese", in English "veal shank in Milanese style". Lombardy also produces risotto alla Milanese, which is grown west of Milan. Not forgetting the excellent wines of Lombardy, such as those of the Franciacorta wineries, the Oltrepó Pavese wine-growing areas and the lands around Lake Garda.
