Vacation on Eiderstedt

Location and orientation

Eiderstedt, the quiet oasis at the North Sea

Eiderstedt is a peninsula on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein and belongs to the district of Nordfriesland. It was built around 1200 A.D. by dykes to gain land. Eiderstedt is 30 kilometres long and 15 kilometres wide and originally consisted of two islands and a peninsula. Since the peninsula is designed for tourism, Eiderstedt has many apartments and vacation rentals that can be rented for the holidays.

Unique nature

On Eiderstedt you will find one thing first and foremost: dunes and salt marshes. Especially on the west coast of Eiderstedt off St. Peter-Ording you can find these extraordinary landscapes, which are very popular with tourists and which remind more of Sylt or Amrum than of the usual and remaining vegetation of the west coast. Eiderstedt has a total of 175 hectares of coastal dunes. The so-called Magdalenenspitze is the highest dune of Eiderstedt.

Travelers and Activities

The landmark of the peninsula: Westerhever

It is mainly known through television advertising and many people recognize it when they see a picture of it, but only very few know where the building stands: We are talking about the lighthouse Westerhever on Eiderstedt. The lighthouse has been in service for over 100 years, as construction work began in 1906. The lighthouse has 9 floors and around it there are other houses where the lighthouse keeper used to live with his family. Nowadays the Wadden Sea shelter is located in the houses.

Eiderstedt - a place for nature lovers

Eiderstedt is known for its green expanse, meadows and tranquillity. In addition to the memorable and impressive nature, which is marked by the North Sea climate, there are also 18 historic churches and about 70 of the former 400 barges, which characterize the area. This special architecture was introduced to Eiderstedt by the Dutch from the 15th to the 17th century and the most famous "Haubarg" in the region is the "Rote Haubarg", which was converted into a restaurant.
