The choice of accommodation is extremely wide and on Holidu you are guaranteed to find a vacation rental or apartment to suit your taste!

    Location and orientation

Holidays in the south of Denmark

The region of Southern Denmark - or Syddanmark - is one of the five Danish regions that have emerged since 2007. It covers the south of Jutland from the North Sea down to the Baltic Sea and, of course, the island of Funen and its offshore islands. The largest municipality in southern Denmark is Odense on the island of Funen, followed by Esbjerg in the south and the administrative centre of the Vejle region in the heart of southern Denmark. Technically speaking, the region begins directly after the German border. The landscape is very varied: on the one hand there are the rugged fjords that stretch far into the country and miles of sandy beaches, as well as wide grasslands and dense forests - the ideal destination for an active holiday in nature! As public transport in the countryside is quite limited, it is best for an independent holiday to arrive by car.

The region of southern Denmark can be divided into two parts: east of the "Little Belt" is the Fyn delta and west of it lies the Sydjylland delta.

    Top 5 travel tips

    1. Hiking in the Wadden Sea National Park

The Vadehavet or Wadden Sea National Park starts just behind the German border and stretches north to Blavandshuk and Ho Bugt. Also some islands belong to the National Park, which has been recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is characterised above all by its flat marshlands, romantic dune landscapes and of course Denmark's oldest town Ribe. Ribe has preserved much of its Romanesque and Gothic architecture in its old town, the best example being the Cathedral and the remains of Riberhus Castle on the outskirts. With a vacation rental in Ribe you are perfectly situated to explore the National Park from here. Animal lovers also get their money's worth in the Wadden Sea National Park: it is considered a real Mecca for birdwatchers and on the sandbanks you can observe many seals sunbathing.

    2. A trip to Legoland

If you are on holiday with the children in Southern Denmark, then a visit to Legoland Billund should also be on the agenda. In the home of the legendary children's toy, the largest amusement park in southern Denmark is waiting and is considered the most visited tourist attraction in Jutland. Here you can experience rapid rides on roller coasters or even create small architectural works of art and let your imagination run wild. Here, in nine different worlds, you can immerse yourself in the various themed areas that will delight both the youngest and the greatest explorers. The "highlight" is the LEGO House, opened in 2017, which stretches up to an incredible 23 metres into the sky. In the Lego Museum you can learn more about the history and success story behind the Danish company and in numerous restaurants and, of course, vacation rental complexes around the complex it is perfect to relax after an exciting day.

    3. The island of Fanö

Fanö is one of the Danish Wadden Sea islands and lies about 50 kilometres from the German island of Sylt. Once "just" a sandbank, over the centuries Fanö has transformed itself into a stately island, about 16 kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide at its widest point. Today Fanö is a paradise for all outdoor lovers. There is a very well-developed cycle path network, which ranges from "leisurely along the beach" to challenging mountain bike routes through dune plantations. Even golfers are guaranteed to be happy on Denmark's oldest golf course and a very special experience are mudflat walks to the seals on Galgerev. Or you can search for amber, which can be found here in many corners and sometimes buried deep in the sand - a real treasure hunt!

    4. Bathing on the most beautiful beaches of southern Denmark

When it comes to the most beautiful beaches in Southern Denmark, there are many opinions. Of course we can't reveal all of them, but here is a small selection of our favourites: Nymindegab beach is situated on the North Sea and is perfect for all those who are looking for absolute relaxation and peace during their holidays. There is no quarrel about the last deckchair - because you can bring it yourself to the almost deserted beach. If you are on holiday in the administrative centre of southern Denmark, Vejers, then you have the beach almost right on your doorstep - and can drive to the beach by car. And then there's the beach at Blaavand, Denmark's westernmost point. This area is especially popular with families because of its beautiful beaches but also because of the tourist conditions.

    5. Kayaking driving in Kattegat

Series fans know the name "Kattegat" as the main location of the Viking series "Vikings". But the exciting sea area between the Danish Jutland and the Swedish west coast has much more to offer. For example, Mariager Fjord is an ideal outdoor water playground, where you can hire canoes, kayaks and snowboats to explore the coastline at literally every corner. Or you can swing onto the kiteboard and let yourself be carried into the air. Or you can race on water skis over the cool floods. The possibilities of water sports activities in Kattegat are varied and provide exciting experiences on the water all year round.
