1. Indulge in lemon delicacies

Popularly known as "sfusato di Amalfi", lemons are the symbol of Amalfi, The bright yellow color resembles the sun and its scent is delicate and intense. 2. Visit the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea

Amalfi’s cathedral is a melange of different architectural styles, built mainly in the 13th century, to house the relics of St Andrew apostle. Admire the Arabic-Norman exteriors, the Baroque interiors, the huge bronze doors and the mosaics. Climb up the 65 steps and see what it’s like from the heights. From 10 am to 5 pm you can only enter the cathedral through the Chiostro del Paradiso.

On the left of the cathedral’s porch you can see these Moorish-style cloisters from the 13th century. Here there are buried several important citizens of that, surrounded by the marble columns, arches and a beautiful garden. There is also the Basilica del Crocefisso, with several frescoes and reliquary heads. During the day, the access to the cathedral is only through here.

4. Visit the Grotta dello Smeraldo

Just a couple of miles west of Amalfi, the waters of a grotto are an intense emerald green color. The stalactites, up above, hang down from the tall ceiling, and the stalagmites rise up high, giving the grotto a unique charm. You can reach the grotto by bus or by boat from Amalfi. A curious thing about this grotta is the underwater presepe (nativity scene) made from local ceramics and submerged 4m beneath the surface. On 24 December and 6 January every year, skin-divers flock over here for the traditional pilgrimage to admire the presepe.

No trip is complete until the culinary traditions have been experienced. Italy is well known for its cuisine of fresh products, olive oil and quality meats and fish. The MIchelin-starred restaurant La Caravella, is still in a humble and quiet spot of Amalfi, and true to its roots. There is a former paper mill from the 13th century that was refurbished and turned into a museum. As we have just mentioned, Amalfi and the paper have a close relation. Papermaking dates back to the 12th century.
