Location and orientation
Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Inhabited by over 1.5 million people, the Arab metropolis is located on an island in the Persian Gulf, about 70 square kilometers in size. Connected to the mainland by three bridges named Mussafa, al-Maqtaa and Sheikh-Zayed, the main island is surrounded by a collection of artificially created neighbouring islands, which are currently being built on and thus extend the settlement area of the holiday region in the long term.
The traditional city name Abu Dhabi means "Father of the Gazelle" in Arabic.
