Strand is a municipality in the west of Norway, located in Rogaland in the district Ryfalke. The municipality on the southern edge of the Boknafjord lies opposite the town of Stavanger. The centre is Jørpeland with about 6.500 inhabitants, the next biggest village is Tau with about 3.000 inhabitants.Between fjords and lakes
Strand borders Hjelmeland to the north and Forsand to the south. In the southwest, the two islands Idse and Idsal between Høgsfjord and Idsefjord belong to the municipality. The small islands of Heng and Sør-Hidle lie in the Boknafjord between the beach and Stavanger. The lakes Tysdalsvatnet, Bjørheimsvatnet and Vostervatnet also belong to the beach.
Things to know
On 1 May, the inhabitants of Jørpeland and Tau compete against each other in a big race, the so-called Strandamila. By bike or on foot it goes over the motorway. The race attracts several hundred spectators every year.
Mountain biker Gunn-Rita Dahle, gold medallist at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, comes from Strand.
