A service animal is a trained companion that helps a guest with a disability. As a host, you must welcome guests with service animals, even if your property does not normally accept pets, and you cannot charge extra fees for them.
What is a service animal?
A service animal is not a pet. It is trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability. Common types include:
- Guide dogs for blind or visually impaired guests
- Hearing alert dogs for deaf or hard of hearing guests
- Seizure alert dogs for guests with epilepsy
- Assistance dogs for other disabilities
Can I refuse a guest with a service animal?
No. You cannot refuse a guest because they have a service animal, and you cannot apply your pet policy to them.
Can I charge a pet fee for a service animal?
No. Service animals are not pets, so pet fees and extra cleaning charges do not apply.
Where must service animals be allowed?
- In all areas of the property that are open to guests in general
- Throughout the stay, without extra conditions
What are the legal requirements in Europe?
