On the banks of the River Adige, enchanting Verona has timeless monuments, a picturesque town center, and a romantic reputation as the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In our travel guide you will find great things to do in Verona.

1. Hidden Gem Verona: Piazzale Castel San Pietro

The Piazzale is a medieval fortress set high on a hilltop above the city. The architecture is quite remarkable, being one of the largest historic buildings in Verona, but the views from the surrounding terrace are the main reason to make the calorie-burning climb. From here you have a complete panorama over the rooftops of Verona. For the ones who don’t want to walk there: you can also take a cable car to the “Castel San Pietro”. We would of course recommend to watch the sunset here.

2. Hidden Gem Verona: La Bottega della Gina

This restaurant offers a comfortable setting to try homemade pastas and local products. They have a small seating area but it is more “pasta to go”. Famous for its tortellini, made by Gina and her staff every day, the restaurant offers interesting choices, such as tortellone zucchine pomodorini and scampi. But also make sure to try the truffle pasta! One portion costs about 8 Euro. Every cent for this delicious fresh made pasta is worth it !

3. Hidden Gem Verona: Gelateria La Romana

Ice cream heaven! No matter if you fancy more traditional or more crazy flavours everybody will get here what he/she is looking for. It is not located in the city center, so a little bit away from the crowd and tourist traps. The gelato is produced in house with high quality ingredients. Simply creamy dreamy! How about praline crumble and dark chocolate with sour cherries?

4. Hidden Gem Verona: Casa di Giulietta

The building, dating back to the 13th and renovated in the last century, features the balcony where Romeo promised his beloved Juliet eternal love in Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. The interior of the house can be visited and you can stand on Juliet’s balcony. Although we would not recommend to go inside as it gets super crowded there. The entrance to the courtyard is for free though.
