Recommended day trips
Lake Skadar (also Skadar Lake): The small village of Virpazar is the main attraction of Lake Skutari. There are a few restaurants and hotels there. You can go on boat tours or kayak tours on the lake. This is an absolute MUST when you are there. The restaurant “Restoran Jezero” is located on the other side of the lake. From there you have a wonderful view of the lake and the food is fantastic. It's not an insider tip, but it's definitely worth a visit.
Durmitor National Park: About 2.5 hours by car from Podgorica, in the north of the country. It is best to look for accommodation near Zabljak (largest town in the area, only one supermarket and 4-5 restaurants).
Hike to Black Lake: Jablan Lake is located in Durmitor National Park. The route is around 7 kilometres long and takes around two and a half hours. Lonely hiking trails await you, with a maximum of 2-3 people and a few cows crossing your path.
Ring road around Durmitor National Park: Similar to Iceland, there is a ring road that runs through the national park with signs with so-called viewpoints everywhere. We particularly recommend stopping at Tara Canyon, Lake Susicko and the Prevoj Seldo mountain range. There is still snow here even in summer, creating incredible images.
Sveti Stefan: can be reached in 40 minutes from Kotor. The island is divided into a private beach and a public beach. A day trip is enough.
Little Niagara Falls: Still rather unknown but absolutely worth seeing are the small Niagara Falls near Podgorica. The best way to find it is to enter “Restoran Niagra” in Google maps.
Which cities should I visit in Montenegro?
Budva: The old town, which is located on a small peninsula, is particularly worth seeing. Otherwise, Budva and the small pebble beach are quickly covered. If you're not into partying, a half-day trip is definitely enough.
Kotor: Kotor itself has a beautiful old town that is known for its cats. You should definitely take a stroll through it. A must is a hike to the fortress of Kotor, from where you have a breathtaking view. Note that it is only open until 8 pm! If you go in summer, you should definitely go in the morning, when it's cooler and there are no tourists from the cruise ships. It's best to spend the night along the peninsula that leads to Tivat. There are cute little stone houses right on the water here.
Tivat and Port of Montenegro: Drive from Kotor to Tivat along the coast. Beautiful little fishing villages await you here. The harbour of Montenegro itself is definitely worth seeing. Everything here is new and artificial, huge yachts and chic hotels are waiting for you.
Perast: Beautiful little old town from where you can take the ferry to the island “Our Lady of Rocks”.
Our pirate tip: Also visit the deserted pebble beach Velja Spila Beach (approx. 30 min drive from Kotor), as well as the winding road to Lovcen National Park. Very worth seeing & great views of Kotor Bay.
How do I get from A to B?
Plane: There are no domestic flights in Montenegro, the country is far too small for that. Although there are a few smaller airports, these are currently only intended for private shuttles.
Train: There is only one functioning railway line in Montenegro. This runs from the harbour town of Bar via Podgorica to Belgrade. There is one train in the morning and one night train in the evening. The daytime journey is worthwhile, as the route is truly marvellous. It runs over Lake Skutari, past mountain lakes and deep gorges. A real highlight for all railway fans.
Bus: The most common means of transport. The network is now well developed and you can reach almost any place in a few hours by bus. A journey from Podgorica to Kotor, for example, costs around 15 euros and takes just under 2 hours.
Car hire: This is probably still the best way to discover the country. Thanks to the short distances and cheap hire cars, you can see many sights in a short time.
